Abstract
The genesis of modern‑Chinese physiology may date back to an even earlier period. Nevertheless, the founding of the Chinese Association for Physiological Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the Society) in 1926 stands as an undisputed landmark event, marking the transformation of physiological research in China from fragmented and uncoordinated endeavours to centralized and organized undertakings. As time marches on, ninety years have slipped by in the twinkling of an eye. The relentless passage of time erodes our intact, lucid memories, and details of many past events have gradually faded into obscurity. Even so, the historical significance of the Society’s foundation has become increasingly prominent. Ninety years is not an extremely long span of time, yet reflection upon this chapter of history yields numerous thought‑provoking insights. I came to this discipline late in life. When I embarked on my career in physiology in 1963, more than thirty years had already elapsed since the Society’s establishment. Still, I have witnessed the vicissitudes and development of the Society over well‑nigh half a century, and served it for many years. I was fortunate enough to work in close proximity to many senior predecessors and scholars, benefiting from their personal guidance and wisdom. On the occasion of the Society's 90th anniversary, I set down some reflections arising from my review of its history, hoping to seek comments and advice from colleagues in the academic community.
