Abstract

Clarifying the regulation mechanisms of primordial follicle initiation is crucial for the prevention of premature ovarian failure and treatment of female infertility. Reproductive lifespan in female mammals is related to the size of primordial follicles pool which relies on the balance between activated and quiescent primordial follicles, therefore, the molecular mechanisms underlying recruiting quiescence primordial follicles have become a hotspot recently. Multiple studies have shown that genetic mutations, local ovarian autocrine and paracrine factors, proto-oncogene andtumor-suppressor genes involved in the maintenance of balance between quiescence and activated primordial follicles. In the present review, we summarize the important signaling molecules and pathways that maintain the quiescence of primordial follicles to provide insight for prolonging reproductive lifespan.
