Abstract

Rabbits under urethane anesthesia were infused with 0.9% or 0.8% NaCl solution at constant rate for maintaining a state of hydration. In these animals there was a steady renal excretion of water and sodium. However, after a 10-minute unilateral electroacupuncture of the points corresponding to “Sanyinjao” and “Zhaohai” in human leg as described in Chinese Traditional Medicine caused a marked increase in urine flow, urinary sodium excretion and osmolar clearance in both isotonic and hypotonic saline infused animals, but had no significant effect on urinary sodium concentration. After bilateral cervical vagotomy or denervation of bilateral renal nerves the effect of electroacupuncture mentioned above no longer appeared.
