Abstract

In dorsal hippocampus of 35 rabbits, unit discharges of 103 neurons were recorded by glass microelectrodes and classified as follows: Spontaneous intermittent discharges not related to respiratory rhythm were observed in 56 neurons, which could be divided into two types, respectively characterized by long time and short time oscillations. Spontaneous discharges with respiratory rhythm were observed iri 47 neurons, which could be divided into 3 types, namely, inspiratory type (n=15), expiratory type (n=9), and phase-spanning respiratory type (n=23). The results mentioned above might suggest that the respiratory information on to the hippocampus of the limbic system is an interesting problem in the coordination of emotional activities.
