Abstract

Experiments were carried out on 10 healthy young subjects for observation of influence of inhalating 0.5-7% CO_(2) on the ventilatory function of the lungs. Respiratory rate, tidal volume, minute volume, alveolar Pco_(2) and the ventilatory sensitivity to CO_(2) were correlated with the concentration of CO_(2) in the inspired air. After CO_(2) inhalation, the output of CO_(2) expired decreased. It returned to the control level within 3-5 min, provided the concentration of CO_(2) in the inspired air was not more than 5%. According to the characteristics and patterns of human response to CO_(2) innaiauon, a suggestion of tnree compensatory areas was maae.
