Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to determine the relationship between the changes in the concentration of plasma free fatty acids (FFA) and different
periods of interdigestive myoelectric complex (IDMEC). Chronic experiments were
performed on conscious fasting dogs with implanted three bipolar electrodes on the surface of duodenum to record the intestinal electrical activity. The results were as follows: (1) The FFA varied in each period of IDMEC cycles regularly, being the highest in phase Ⅲ and lowest in phase I of IDMEC (P<0.01). (2) After intravenous injection of propranolol plasma FFA concentration was reduced and the cyclic fluctuations were abolished. (3) After intravenous injection of phetolamine, plasma FFA concentration became higher than that in normal condition and the cyclic fluctuations abolished. (4) In vagotomy, cyclic fluctuation of plasma FFA level persisted after IDMEC cycles. The aforementioned results indicate that in fasting dogs the concentration of plasma FFA changes with different phases of the IDEMC cycle, which is affected by sympathetic nerve activity.
