Abstract
The effects of immersing rice panicles in various concentrations of several acids on the glume opening and vitality of pollens were observed. We found that glume opening could be promoted by formic acid, acetic acid and propanoic acid between 0.5%-8% concentration. Formic acid (0.5%-1.5%) acetic acid (0.5%-2%) and propanoic acid (0.5%-2%) had no bad effect on glumes. Though hydrochoric acid, nitric acid and sulphuric acid could also promote glume opening at certain concentration, their acidity were so strong that the glumes were damaged seriously and the pollens would lose vitality.
