Abstract

Ethylene production in both leaves and stems/roots was markedly inhibited by pretreatment with trifluralin at 1.0-4.0#mu#g/g of soil after infection by the pathogen. The suppression of ethylene production in diseased seedlings by trifluralin was positively related to the reduction of disease incidence and DSI. Spraying the trifluralin-treated cotton seedlings with ethephon 138.4#mu#mol/L after inoculation increased both ethylene production and disease incidence and DSI. In contrast, foliar spray of seedlings grown in herbicide-free soils with ethylene biosynthesis inhibitor (2,4-dinitrophenol) and ethylene action inhibitor (silver thiosulfate) after inoculation resulted in the reduction of disease incidence and DSI. These results suggested that suppression of ethylene production may be involved in trifluralin-induced resistance of cotton seedlings to Fusarium wilt.
