Abstract

The mitochondrial DNAs (mtDNAs) of cytoplasmic male sterile (cms) lines of K- and V-type with the same nuclear background were compared with that of their maintainer line by RFLP and RAPD analyses. Distinct polymorphisms were identified among the mtDNAs of cms-K, cms-V and their maintainer line, the orgnization and structure of mitochondrial genes such as atp9, atpA, coxII and cob were different remarkably among the three lines, which means that mtDNAs may be responsible for the formation of cms in wheat. However, it is difficult to identify which mtDNA fragment is definitely responsible for cms because there are so many differences between the mtDNAs of cms line and its maintainer line.
