Effects of fungal elicitors on the cell growth and the shikonin biosynthesis in Arnebia euchroma cells in suspension culture
Abstract
The shikonin biosynthesis in Arnebia euchroma cells in suspension culture was enhanced by treating with four kinds of fungal elicitors separately, among them the Aspergillus niger elicitor had the highest inducing efficiency, and led to the secretion of secondary products, such that more than 30% of the shikonin produced was found in the medium. The elicitation depended on the types and concentration of the elicitor, and the physiological status of cells in suspension. The optimum concentration of A. niger elicitor was 160#mu#g/nl culture medium. The best resonse of A. euchroma cells to elicitor treatment was in the late exponential growth phase and the early stationary phase. After adding elicitor, both PAL activity of A. euchroma cells and the shikonin content in the medium were remarkably increased, showing positive relationship between them.
