Abstract
Ca~(2+) and CaM plays important role in the acquistition of freezing tolerance by citrus protoplasts during cold acclimation. Ca~(2+) chelation or antagonism to calmodulin markedly inhibited the development of cold-induced freezing tolerance in protoplasts. Calcium ionophore A_(23187) strongly increased freezing tolerance of the protoplasts without cold acclimation, and the effects of A_(23187) was weakened by TFP, a calmodulin antagonist. These results suggest that freezing tolerance of protoplasts was mediated by Ca~(2+) and calmodulin.
