Abstract

Effects of 4PU-30〔N-phenyl-N^-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl) urea〕on senescence of rice leaves and contents of endogenous hormones were investigated. ELISA (enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay) was used to determine the contents of endogenous hormones. In the experiments with detached leaves: The top two fully developed leaves were collected during heading and cut into 5 cm segments, then floated on the surfaces of 4PU-30 at concentrations 0.004,0.04,0.4 and 4.0 mu mol/L respectively and incubated in darkness at 30℃. The results showed that the progress of leaf senescence was retarded significantly at all concentrations, meanwhile, the increase of content of endogenous ABA and the decrease of contents of endogenous ZRs, GAs and IAA were all retarded. In the experiment with attached leaves, rice plant were sprayed with 115 ml/m2 4PU-30 (4 mu mol/L) solution 10 d after heading, and then sprayed at one week intervals twice. The results showed that senescence of attached rice leaves was delayed significantly by 4PU-30, and the increase of the content of endogenous ABA and the decreases of the contents of endogenous ZRs,GAs and IAA were all slowed down as compare with the control. Therefore, it was proposed that the mechanism of action of 4PU-30 in delaying the senescence of rice leaves is through the regulation of the change in concentration of endogenous plant hormones in leaves, i.e, by delaying the increase of ABA content and the decreases of ZRs, GAs and IAA contents in rice leaves.
