Abstract

The traditional method of germination inhibitor extraction, isolation and identification was improved in the present study. The inhibitors were preliminarily isolated by using a series of solvents, then separated and purified by TLC, and then further isolated and identified with GC-MS. Finally, the IC_(50)(concentration of 50% inhibition) of the inhibitors were determined by calibration with the standards. Three kinds of inhibitor were extractred, isolated and identified for the first time, from the fruit of American ginseng ( Panax quinquefolium L.). They are chloral hydrate, hexanoic acid and octanoic acid and the IC_(50) are 577.6 #mu#l/L, 128.4 #mu#l/L and 87.7 #mu#l/L, respectively.
