Abstract

A comparative study of the mode of resistance inheritance and some physiological and agronomic traits has been conducted on the control plants and the transgenic plants from soybean line 83117 to which an atrazine-resistance gene was transferred. By examining the response of leaves to atrazine spray, molecular hybridization with a probe, assaying with flurescence induction kinetics and by examining the response of plants to atrazine spray in field, it has been proved that the resistance gene transferred into soybean plants has been not only expressed in F_(1) generation, but also transmitted to the progenies (7th generation in 1993). The experiment of reciprocal crossing (transgenic plant×control plant; control plant×transgenic plant) has proved that, the trait involved in the resistance to atrazine of F_(1) plant is the same as that of its mother plant, implying that this trait is inherited maternally, so this gene is a cytoplasmic one, located in the chloroplast. The results of photosynthesis measurements, seed composition analysis and examination of agronomic traits (plant height, 100 grain weight and yield per plant) indicated that there was no significant difference between the transgenic plants and ghese of the original line, so the resistance gene had no adverse effect on these traits. When sprayed with atrazine, the transgenic plants showed resistance to atrazine.
