Abstract

The empirical model of stomatal responses proposed by Ball et al.has been tested by analysis and simulation.A mechanistic model of stomatal conductance developed by the authors was adopted to test the empircal model. The two approaches have led to the same conclusions:(1) the radiation flux or ambient CO_(2) concentration should not be too small as has been pointed out by some authors;(2)the boundary layer resistance of leaf had significant influence on the results of regression i.e.,when the data measured with different boundary layer resistances were fitted by linear regression,(3)the model did not simulate the influence of leaf temperature successfully, and hence can be used only at fixed leaf temperatures;and(4)the influence of soil water potential was not significant. From the second point,it is concluded that wind speed over the leaf surface plays an important role in regulating stomatal movement and that a comprehensive model of stomatal behaviors must incorporate wind speed over the leaf surface.
