Abstract
Under aerobic conditions, pyocyanine alleviated strong-light-induced inhibition of electron transport in spinach chloroplasts.Although nigericin,an uncoupler eliminating transmembrane proton gradient, aggravated photoinhibition,it did not abolish the protective effect of pyocyanine.Pyocyanine could protect both photosystem Ⅰand photosystem Ⅱ,but the protection of photosystem Ⅱwas observbed only at the early stage of photoinhibition.Under anaerobic conditions, pyocyanine aggravated photoinhibition in chloroplasts and lowered the activity of DCIP photoreduction and the rate of electron transport fromm water to p-BQ.It suggests that pyocyanine alleviate photoinhibition in chloroplasts by promoting cyclic electron transport around photosystem Ⅱmediated by cytochrome b559.
