Abstract

During the aging process, the total respiration rate (V_(t)and the capacity of alternative pathway (V_(ait) in slices in creased by 5-fold and 28-fold, respectively, but the alternative pathway was almost not operative in the absence of KCN. Application of 20#mu#mol/L of salicylic acid to aging slices slightly increased the total respiration rate and the capacity of alternative pathway, however however, the operation of the SHAM-sensitive alternative pathway was greatly enhanced by application of salicylic acid. The elevated operation of the alternative pathway, which is known as the nonphosphorlating elec ron transport system, led to a decline of the RCR ratio as well as of the ADP/O value in mitochondria.
