Abstract

Carbohydrate content in rice (Oryza saliva L.) seedlings grown under blue light decreased, while nitrogenous substances accumulated. As compared with white light or dark treatment, content of all kinds of carbohydrates decreased, and the decrease of starch was most significant. Blue linght promoted the increase of protiein content, which could be inhibited by cycloheximide (CHX). Rice seedlings exposed to blue light had a greater amount of total amino acids (hydrolysate of protein) than those exposed to white light or in the dark. Free glutamate and aspartate, which occupy central positions in the metabolism of amino acids, were increased in rice seedlings treated by blue light. Blue light promoted the respiration of both etiolated and green seedlings in which photosynthesis was inhibited by DCMU. The activity of pyruvate kinase was increased by blue light. At the same nitrate concentration (50 mmol/L), blue light was better than white light for nitrate reductase induction. The activity of glutamine synthetase (GS), glutamate synthase (GOGAT), GOT and GPT were increased in rice seedlings grown under blue light.
