Abstract
The level of PEP-carboxylase activity in the leaves of M. cordifolium, an inducible CAM plant, increased greatly after drought and salt stress. Marked increase in PEP-carboxylase protein after drought was shown. Parallelism in the change of the activity level and protein mass of PEP-carboxylase was observed in the course of drought treatment, showing that the increase in PEP-carboxylase activity was due to the increase in its protein mass. After rewatering, the levels of PEP-carboxylase activity and protein mass decreased simultaneously, and , two weeks later, both of them decreased to the same levels as those before drought. Increase in PEP-carboxylase level and decrease in RubisCO level may be part of the biochemical features of CAM induction by drought in M. cordifolium. After drought, the most marked increase in PEP-carboxylase activity and protein mass was observed in middle mature leaves, little change can be seen in the youngest leaf.
